It was a tough finish for the Hillsboro girls soccer team on Tuesday, April 23, as they fell to Pana 1-0 on a late goal by the Panthers.
Playing at the Hillsboro Sports Complex, the two conference foes were scoreless throughout the first half. With both teams still in the hunt for the conference title should Carlinville falter (the Cavies had handed both Hillsboro and Pana their only conference losses to that point), the question would be, who would blink first?
The answer came in the 75th minute, when the Panthers turned a turnover into a scoring opportunity and converted for the only goal of the game.
The win would keep the Panthers' title hopes alive as they remain one of two SCC teams with only one conference loss. The other, Roxana, takes on Carlinville on Thursday and if they could beat the Cavies, no easy task, a three-way tie for first could be in the cards.
For Hillsboro, the focus is now on improving and finishing the regular season on a high note before going into regional play in Carlinville. The Toppers are the fourth seed in the sub-sectional and will play Staunton in their opening match on Wednesday, May 8. The winner of that game will get the winner of the May 7 match between the host Cavies and winner of the May 3 opening match between North Mac and Southwestern.
