A contingent of six Litchfield High School athletes joined some of the area's best on Monday, May 13, at Glenwood High School in Chatham for this year's Capital Area Classic.
The group showed that they could more than hold their own, taking two firsts and three seconds in seven events, never finishing worse than fifth overall at the elite meet.
On the girls' side, Litchfield sent two state qualifiers in Carson Lemon and Carly Guinn, plus Sarah Yakana, who won the long jump at the South Central Conference. Yakana made the most of her opportunity to continue her season, popping a 16'5" jump that was nine inches better than her season-best.
Lemon and Guinn would also do well in Chatham. Lemon cleared 9'0" to tie Abigail McCue of South County for second. Rochester's Jamie Hefley would take the top spot with a mark of 11'1". Guinn would finish fifth in the high jump, but had a solid jump of 5'0".
On the boys' side, Litchfield scored their other win, with Sam Painter going 21'5" to win the long jump. The Panther senior also finished second in the triple jump, going 42'4.5" to finish just behind Will Ross of South County, who went 43'3.5".
Painter's fellow senior, Alex Fischer, also scored a runner-up finish, running a 2:05.18 in the 800 meters. Only Graham Turk of Glenwood ran it quicker, clocking in at 2:01.22.
Both the boys and Lemon and Guinn will be in action on Thursday. The pair of Lady Panthers will be competing in the IHSA Class 1A State Finals at 9 a.m. in Charleston, while the boys head to the Gillespie Sectional, which starts at 4:30 p.m.
