The forecast wasn’t ideal for Tuesday’s golf match at the Litchfield Country Club, but in the words of Carl Spackler of Caddyshack fame, “I’d keep playing. I don’t think the heavy stuff’s going to come down for quite a while.”
The “heavy stuff” never really made an appearance, but the golfers from Lincolnwood-Morrisonville, Taylorville and Litchfield did have to deal with a steady dose of drops throughout their nine-hole round on Sept. 1. Everyone made it through though, with Litchfield edging the visiting Lancers by two strokes.
With just four strokes separating their top four players, the host Purple Panthers shot a 182 on the day to beat the Lancers’ 184. Taylorville would finish third in the match, shooting a 197 for their round.
Utilizing his team’s depth, Coach Dan Newkirk trotted out another new configuration to his top six, with similar results to the past matches as Litchfield improved to 6-1 on the year.
Freshman Tug Schwab led the LHS contingent with a 43, while sophomore Zach Boston was just a stroke back with a 45. Ryan Baugher and Cam Frerichs would wrap up the scoring with a pair of 47s, while Keagan Marten (49) and Blaine Stewart (52) weren’t far from their teammates in the fifth and sixth slots.
Schwab’s round would be the third best of the day indivually, behind Briar Dempsey of Taylorville, who shot a 42, and Nate Brockmeyer of Lincolnwood, who shot a 41 to earn medalist honors.
All six Lincolnwood players would shoot 50 or better on Tuesday, but couldn’t quite string together enough shots to overtake the Panthers. Devin Brown added in a 46 for Coach Verne Pinkston’s club, while Will Jenkins finished with a 48.
Michael Jones and Braxton Schmedeke tied for the fourth spot with a pair of 49s, with Michael Graham taking sixth man honors with a 50. The loss was the first of the season for the Lancers.
In addition to the varsity teams, Litchfield also put their JV squad on the course and grouped together four scores that would have beaten the Tornadoes by two strokes.
Kelvin Dooley led the Junior Panthers with a 46, while A.J. Odle and Drew Hartzell added a 48 and a 49 respectively. Haydan Brown (52), Ian Otto (52) and Zach Leitschuh (57) rounded out the JV squad.
Weather permitting, Lincolnwood will be back on the course today, Sept. 3, as they host Carlinville and Carrollton. The Litchfield boys are off until Sept. 8, when they head to Edgewood Golf Course in Auburn to face the Trojans and Taylorville.
