Six somewhat-seaworthy vessels took to the shores at Lake Hillsboro for the fifth annual Imagine Hillsboro Cardboard Boat Regatta, held Thursday, July 4.
This year, the contest had a new location, between the beach and Fourth of July Point, and hundreds of spectators joined the fun to see whose boat would come out on top.
The father-son team of Travis and Hughes Pfeiffer of Edwardsville sailed to victory in their Jaws-themed boat. It was the second year they have participated in the competition. They won custom-made paddles, donated by Opera House Brewing Company.
New to this year's contest, Jack Nollman and Tom Dean of Pana, won the Most Creative award for their orange and blue Pana Pride boat and matching gondolier outfits and hats. They won Titanic-themed ice cube trays.
And this year's Titanic award went to Oliver Wright and Alex Miller of Hillsboro, who went down with their Chevy Bel Air-themed entry. They received a book on how to build boats.
Other participants included Griffin Wright of Hillsboro and Dawsen Loafman of Nokomis; Abbigail Schreiber and Olivia Gent of Thacker Insurance in Hillsboro; and Paul Mueller and Kevin Pollard of Zion Lutheran School in Litchfield.
This year's event was organized by Imagine Hillsboro volunteers, with additional help on-site from the Hillsboro Auxiliary Police and the Hillsboro Volunteer Fire Department dive team. Paul Sellers of Stray Dog Karaoke donated his services to provide music throughout the event.
