Members of the Litchfield School Board voted six to one to hire current Assistant Superintendent Debbie Poffinbarger to replace Jeff Strieker as superintendent, beginning on Jan. 1.
Strieker put in his letter of resignation at the last regular school board meeting on Oct. 20, as he took a job as the superintendent of the Breese School District, effective Jan. 1.
The school board held a special meeting on Thursday evening, Oct. 27, in the Radius Room at Litchfield High School to discuss his replacement. All board members were present, except for Jeff Helgen, who participated by telephone conference.
Board members met in closed session for about an hour before reconvening in open session.
Board member Dennis Scobbie made a motion to engage a professional executive search to fill the superintendent's vacancy, but it failed with a lack of a second. He also made a motion to hire former Litchfield Superintendent John Mullett as interim superintendent, and that motion failed for lack of a second.
Scobbie was the lone vote against hiring Poffinbarger as superintendent, and she will assume those duties starting Jan. 1.
Poffinbarger was hired by the district in June as assistant superintendent in charge of curricular programming.
The next meeting of the Litchfield School Board will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 15, beginning at 7 p.m. in the Radius Room at Litchfield High School.
