While older brother Carter Powell wrapped up his career at state with a fifth place finish, Alex Powell made his state debut, going 1-2 in three matches in the 106-pound class.
Powell’s win came in the first round of the consolation bracket, after he lost to Brant Widlowski of Coal City by fall 46 seconds into the second period. The win came over Shea Reisel of Somonauk in a hard fought, back-and-forth match that ended with a pin from the Litchfield sophomore at the 4:53 mark.
Unfortunately, Powell’s journey would end there as he lost to Ethan Monson of Mercer County with 18 seconds left in the second period. While he wasn’t able to join his brother on the medal podium, Powell can take solace in the fact that he still went 26-7 on the season and his only two losses at state came against wrestlers who went on to finish fourth (Monson) and sixth (Widlowski).
