A public hearing regarding a proposed sports complex for the City of Litchfield will take place tonight, July 16, at 6 p.m. at Litchfield City Hall.
The city is seeking a grant through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, which will provide matching funds to purchase a section of property off of Corvette Drive. The city previously applied for the grant, but was not selected as one of the recipients.
The conceptual site plan of the Route 66 Crossing Sports Complex would call for eight soccer fields in phase one, ranging from full-sized 11-on-11 fields to smaller 4-on-4 fields for younger players.
Also included in the plans are a parking lot, limestone walking path, open air gazebo, concession stand and two playgrounds. There is also room for additional baseball or softball fields, which would be phase two of the project.
The hearing will discuss questions such as: Does the proposed acquisition meet the needs of the community for outdoor recreation and sports? Should any recreational amenities be added? Are you in favor of the City of Litchfield applying for a Land and Water Conservation Fund grant to help fund the land acquisition? Are there other comments you have to offer on the project.
Information received from the public will help support the grant the city is seeking from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
Members of the public may also attend the meeting virtually through Zoom at https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86367266360, Meeting ID: 863 6726 6360; or by phone at 1-312-626-6799 meeting code 86367266360# US.
The concept plan will be on display for viewing and representatives from the city will be available for discussion and to answer questions. Written comments may be completed at the meeting or mailed in until July 20. Inquiries may be directed to Tonya Flannery, City Administrator at 217-324-5253.
