Purple Panthers Can't Stop Shells

Posted

The Roxana Shells continued their undefeated streak in the South Central Conference Tuesday evening as they dominated the Purple Panthers in Simmons Gymnasium.

The Shells would jump out ahead of Litchfield early and would build a 40 point lead, eventually winning 66-30.

This contest would be a tale of two tapes as the Shells would come in with a 6-2 record since the change in the calendar, while the Purple Panthers would enter the contest with a 2-5 record.

The Shells would also bring in a three-game winning streak in their South Central Conference schedule, while the Purple Panthers would carry a 1-2 conference record.

Roxana would use the early minutes of the contest to quickly build a big lead in the contest.  The Shells would come out of the gate outscoring Litchfield 17-2 in the first six minutes of the contest.  The Purple Panthers lone basket in that stretch would come from the hands of John Corso, as he connected on a field goal.

In the last two minutes of the opening quarter, the Shells would add six more points to give them a 23-5 lead after one quarter of action.  Austin Niehaus would get the second basket of the contest for the Purple Panthers when he connected on a three point field goal.

The Purple Panthers would put up a fight in the second quarter as they would be able to narrow the Shells lead.

Afterward, the Shells connected on a three-point field goal to start the quarter. Brady Bishop and Blaine Stewart would both hit three-point field goals, narrowing the Shells lead to 26-11.

After a Roxana basket, the Purple Panthers would continue to claw away at the Shells lead.  Litchfield would put in seven unanswered points to give them 18 points in the quarter, and would find themselves down by 11 after trailing by 18 points.

Brady Bishop would put in two free throws to cap off the run and would be the last points of the quarter for Litchfield.  The Shells though would be able to add five more points before the quarter would end.

The late baskets by the Shells would give them a 34-18 lead at the half.  Brady Bishop would lead the Litchfield squad in first half scoring as he connected on eight points all coming in the second quarter.

After a hard fought second quarter, Litchfield would look to knock down the Shells lead a little further. The Shells would have other answers though, as they would once again dominate a quarter.

The Shells would hold the Purple Panthers to only three field goals in the quarter as Roxana would pile on ten field goals and two free throws in the third quarter.

The Shells would find success in scoring off the hands of the Purple Panthers.  Litchfield would commit six turnovers in the quarter that would result in 12 points for the Shells, over 50 percent of the Shells points in the quarter.

Blake McGill would have two of the three field goals in the quarter for Litchfield, and John Corso would add the third basket of the quarter as Litchfield would trail 57-25 after three quarters.

In the final quarter, the Shells would put the finishing touches on the contest as they took a 40-point lead after outscoring Litchfield 9-0 in the opening minutes of the final frame.

The 9-0 run would put the Shells up 66-25 and would clear the bench for Roxana.  Litchfield would add five more points to their total as Cameron Crow and John Corso would connect on baskets to finish out the scoring for Litchfield.

The 66-30 defeat would drop Litchfield to 9-13 overall and 1-3 in the South Central Conference, the Shells would improve to 17-7 overall and 4-0 in the South Central Conference.  Litchfield would be led in scoring by Brady Bishop and John Corso who both added eight points.

Litchfield will be handed another tough task this week as they took part in the Alton Shootout on Saturday against the Metro-East Lutheran Knights.
