Purple Panthers Stay Busy

Posted

After splitting with Hillsboro and Williamsville in their season opener, the Litchfield boys golf team came out with a sweep on their home course on Wednesday, Aug. 26, with wins over Roxana, Pana and Staunton.

The Panthers shot a 172 as a team, good enough to beat Roxana by 16 strokes and Staunton and Pana by 21 and 22 strokes respectively.

The consistency of freshman Tug Schwab paid off for Litchfield once again as the freshman earned medalist honors for the second straight match. Schwab shot a 41 on the day, with three pars and six bogeys at the par-35 Litchfield Country Club.

Cam Frerichs would back Schwab with a 43 as the senior finished the day with the second best round. Frerichs had just one par on the day, but won some strokes back with back-to-back birdies on the par-four third hole and the par-three fourth hole.

A.J. Odle and Zach Boston would put up the third and fourth scoring rounds for Litchfield, tying for third overall with Pana’s Austin Karbach in the match. All three players would shoot 44s on the day, with Odle and Boston both posting three pars in the nine holes.

The Panthers’ fifth and sixth men weren’t far behind their teammates. Ryan Baugher shot a 45, while Ian Otto added a 49. Baugher’s score would have counted for any of the other three teams, while Otto’s would have made the cut for Pana and Staunton.

Coach Dan Newkirk also had two JV players on the course, seniors Haydan Brown and Carter Powell. Both put up solid rounds, shooting 48 and 51 respectively.

At Timber Lakes

On Friday, Aug. 28, the LHS boys were back at it with a match at Timber Lakes Golf Course in Staunton. The Panthers would shoot a 185 on the season as they improved to 5-1 on the year.

The match was a good opportunity for Litchfield to show some of the depth on their 18-man roster as six players played in their first varsity match of the season.

One of those six was Keagan Marten, who earned medalist honors with a 9-over 45.

Haydan Brown would be just behind his teammate, while Blaine Stewart and Zach Leitschuh tied for the fourth scoring round with a 47. In addition to the top four, Kelvin Dooley and Allen Schneider also played, both shooting 53s on the day.

Five players also hit the course for the Litchfield JV team, with Drew Hartzell leading that pack with a 50. Carter Powell would chip in a 60, with Tyler Thompson (69), Ethan Witt (71) and Mitchell Floyd (73) rounding out the group.

At Bulldog Invite

The Panthers’ finished out the busy end of the week with a trip to Country Hills Golf Course in Greenview for the Bulldog Invite. Litchfield would shoot a 397 in the 18-hole, 15-team event, good enough for tenth place in the team standings.

Freshman Tug Schwab paced the Panthers with an 85, which was good enough to tie for sixth place overall. South County’s Dain Richie took the top individual spot, shooting a 70 to beat Dalton Wills of Illini Bluffs by ten strokes.

Zach Boston, one of the few players in the line-up with experience playing in a high school 18-hole tournament, shot a 101 to finish 46th, while Ryan Baugher also made the top 50 with a 103 to tie for 49th.

Freshmen Ian Otto and A.J. Odle would tie for 63rd with a pair of 108s, while Cam Frerichs rounded out the Litchfield contingent with a 113 to finish tied for 73rd.

Illini Bluffs would take the team title at the Bulldog Invite with a 342, while North Mac and Auburn were tied for second with a 354.

Litchfield will face Lincolnwood and Taylorville on Tuesday, Sept. 1, at the Litchfield Country Club for their next match.
