Purple Panthers Sweep Conference Quad

The Litchfield High School track teams picked up a sweep over three South Central Conference opponents on Tuesday, April 2, in a quad meet at Lloyd Hill Field in Litchfield.

The Litchfield boys would edge Hillsboro by six points at the meet, 77 to 71, while Southwestern was third with 61 points and Vandalia was fourth with 48 points.

The Panthers would win six of the 14 events, while coming in second five times. Sam Painter would account for one of each, winning the triple jump with a mark of 42'1" and coming in second in the 100 with a time of 11.7. 

Cameron Crow would also score a first and a second, winning the 400 with a time of 56.1 and jumping 5'8" to place second in the high jump. Litchfield would also take first and second in the pole vault with Garrett Flitz and Will Carlile both clearing 11'6", while they also took second in the shot put, with Jefferson Thomas throwing 38'3.5".

In the longer running events, the Panthers had two firsts and a second. Austin Niehaus would win the 1600 with a time of 5:07.2, while Kevin Pollard won the 3200 in a time of 11:47.6. Alex Fischer had the runner-up finish, running a 2:14.5 to take second in the 800. In the relays, Litchfield was first in the 4x400 and second in the 4x800.

The Toppers would also have six wins on the day, including a double dip from thrower Magnus Wells. The Hillsboro freshman threw 39'2" to win the shot put and 118'5" to win the discus for the Toppers.

Hillsboro also swept the hurdles, with Trevor Toberman winning the 110 hurdles in a time of 18.8 and Cameron Harston, who was second in the 110 hurdles, winning the 300 hurdles in a time of 45.6. Eli Atkins would grab a win in the 800, while Wells' classmate Ayden Brewer was second in the 1600.

Like Litchfield, Hillsboro also had a first and a second in the relays. The Toppers won the 4x800 in a time of 8:56.7 and were second in the 4x200 with a time of 1:42.5.

Girls Results

The Lady Panthers would finish with a slightly larger margin of victory than their male counterparts, beating Southwestern 81-70. Vandalia would be third with 37 points, while Hillsboro was fourth with 29.

Litchfield would finish first or second, and sometimes both, in every race they competed in on Tuesday, scoring eight wins and four second place finishes on the track.

Caroline Quarton would win both the 800 and 1600 with times of 2:34.9 and 5:55.4, while Natalia Deren was second in the 800 (2:50.0) and Kylee Eiting was second in the 1600 (5:58.6). Eiting would also take first in the 3200 with a time of 13:10.

Hailey Bolte and Rylie Jagosh gave Litchfield another one-two finish in the 400, while Carly Guinn was second in the 200. Carson Lemon would sweep the hurdles, running a time of 19.2 in the 100 hurdles. and a 55.6 in the 300 hurdles. Litchfield would also win both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

In the field events, the Panthers scored two more top two finishes. Lemon would clear 8'0" to win the pole vault, while Guinn was second in the high jump with a mark of 5'0".

With standout sprinter Kyra Huber out for the operetta, Hillsboro was reduced to three participants on Tuesday on the girls' side.

Kaci Papin would pick up three wins on the day, taking first in the 100 (13.7), the 200 (28.1) and high jump, where she beat out Guinn by two inches. Papin's sister Ashlyn would be third in the high jump with a mark of 4'10", while also finishing second in the 100 with a time of 13.9.

In the throws, Emma Miller would take second in the shot put with a toss of 29'7", while also finishing seventh in the discus.

Hilsboro will be back in action on Tuesday, April 9, for another SCC quad with Pana, Greenville and Vandalia on the Vandals' home track.

Litchfield will also be in action on April 9, facing Carlinville and Roxana in Carlinville, with the Lady Panthers making a trip to the Carlinville Invitational on Saturday, April 6, as well.
