Quarton Advances To Cross Country State

Posted

After missing last year’s state tournament, Litchfield High School will be represented at the IHSA Class 1A State Cross Country Finals once again

Litchfield senior Caroline Quarton finished 18th overall at the Class 1A Effingham St. Anthony Sectional on Saturday, Nov. 2, and grabbed one of seven individual qualifying spots for next Saturday’s state finals meet in Peoria. Quarton would stop the clock at 19:45.48, edging Jasmyn Dittamore of Cumberland by less than a second. Dittamore also advanced to state, grabbing the last of the seven spots.

Quarton also made it to state as a freshman on the senior-laden squad that finished 12th as a team in 2016. That year, she ran a 20:05 to finish 116th overall. With three years of experience behind her, an even better finish could be in the cards for Quarton in 2019.

As a team, Litchfield finished ninth with 290 points. The top five teams who advanced to state were Monticello (53), Tolono Unity (66), St. Joseph-Ogden (110), St. Thomas More (116) and Urbana University (132).

Kylee Eiting would finish 61st with a time of 21:30.54, while Myka Fenton was 67th with a time of 21:45.26. Delanie Ulrich would be 81st with a time of 22:20.00, while Karly Kruse ran a 23:48.92 to finish 108th. Elizabeth Dawson (25:11.79) and Lauren Thompson (25:47.21) would finish 129th and 137th respectively in the 155-runner field.

While Quarton was running in her fourth sectional, Hillsboro freshman Sierra Compton competed in her first. Compton would finish 90th overall with a time of 22:43.67.

Not long after the Litchfield girls crossed the finish line, the Litchfield boys toed the starting line for their sectional run. The Panthers would finish 15th overall with 378 points. Monticello would take first with 42 points, followed by fellow state qualifiers Urbana University (96), St. Joseph-Ogden (158), Tolono Unity (162) and Robinson (173).

Two Panthers would be less than a minute away from a state berth as the final individual qualifying spot went to Eli Mojonnier of Bismarck-Henning-Rossville-Alvin with a time of 17:01.

Will Carlile would finish just 50 seconds behind Mojonnier with a time of 17:51.46, while Brady Bishop was on his teammate’s heels with a 17:52.68. Carlile would finish 44th overall, while Bishop was 47th in his final run for the Purple Panthers.

Eithan Rigsbey would finish 75th for the Panthers with a time of 18:31.24, while Tucker Lemon was 102nd in his final run with a time of 19:41.49 for the Lincolnwood senior who competes for the Panther co-op team. Sam Horn had the final scoring time for Litchfield with a 20:01.58, good enough for 110th overall, while Kevin Pollard (21:07.00) and Brandon Malloy (23:22.82) rounded out the roster for LHS, finishing 129th and 145th respectively.
