The Nokomis boys basketball team edged closer to the 20-win plateau on Saturday, Feb. 15, with a 67-42 victory over Vandalia to improve to 19-9 on the season,

The Redskins, who have reached the landmark 27 times in 38 years under Coach Steve Kimbro, received a stellar performance from Carter Sabol in the 25-point win over the Vandals.

Sabol and company started off the game with a 13-9 advantage, with five different players scoring for Nokomis. In addition to four points from Sabol, Alex Tosetti hit a three and Evan Herpstreith, Seth Johnson and Jake Johnson all added two for the Redskins.

The Skins would add nine points to that lead by the time the smoke cleared in the second quarter, with Tosetti complimenting Sabol with nine points of his own to make it 34-21 in Nokomis’ favor.

Sabol followed one big quarter with another as Nokomis led 52-32 going into the fourth. In the final eight minutes, the Redskins did most of their damage from the free-throw line, hitting 11-of-12 from the stripe. They would only miss two free throws total in the game, going 14-of-16 in the win.

Tosetti would back Sabol with 14 points, while also contributing six assists and two steals. Jake Johnson would add in seven points, while Evan Herpstreith chipped in six, going 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in the fourth.
