Redskins Earn Share Of PSC Title

Posted

Not many teams get to end their season with a win, but even fewer get the chance to do so after being knocked out of the playoffs.

That was the case for Nokomis this past week as the Redskins picked up a pair of wins over Bunker Hill and Metro-East Lutheran to win a share of the Prairie State Conference title and finish the season 20-5.

To keep their title hopes alive, Nokomis had to dispatch Bunker Hill first on Tuesday, May 28, and took down the Minutemen 11-1 in Nokomis.

After scoring once in the first inning, Nokomis blew the game open with a six-run second inning that gave the Redskins a commanding 7-0 lead.

The third and fourth would be scoreless, but Bunker Hill picked up a run in the top of the fifth, only to have the Redskins get that run back in the bottom half of the inning. In the bottom of the sixth, Nokomis put the game to bed, scoring three runs and setting the mercy rule in place in the Redskins' 11-1 victory.

Nokomis outhit the Minutemen 11-3 in the game, with Carter Sabol going 3-for-4 with a triple and three runs batted in. Nick Mascher would go 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Alex Tosetti chipped in two hits as well. Ryan Janssen also contributed a double in the victory.

Mascher would get the win on the mound for Nokomis, throwing three shutout innings of two hit ball with four strikeouts and three walks for his third victory of the year.

The win over the Minutemen meant that Wednesday's finale against Metro-East Lutheran would be for a share of the conference title with Marquette, who had beaten Nokomis earlier this season, but lost to the Knights on May 8.

Needing a win to stake their claim, Nokomis got a one-hitter from Carter Sabol to pick up a 5-1 victory, their 20th of the season.

Sabol gave up one unearned run in the contest, which came in the first inning. After that, it was all Nokomis as Sabol tossed six straight shutout frames, recording 12 strikeouts and one walk on the day.

The Redskins took their first lead in the bottom of the third inning, scoring twice to make it a 2-1 game. They would add another run in the fifth and two more in the sixth as they outhit the Knights 6-1 in the contest.

Ryan Janssen would go 3-for-3 with a triple and two runs batted in, while Evan Herpstreith had a single, a home run and two RBIs. Drew Masset also had a double for Nokomis, who ended the season 15 games over .500.

This was the second straight year that the Redskins had won at least 20 games, in addition to picking up Coach Brian Pesko's tenth regional championship at Nokomis.

The victory also took some of the sting out of their 5-4 loss to North Clay in the sectional semifinal on May 22, in which the Cardinals scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to pull out the win.

As good as this year's team was, the potential for more awaits next year as the Redskins had no seniors on the roster in 2018-19.
