Redskins End Run At Stove Top Classic

Posted

All things considered, Nokomis' final trip to the Stove Top Stuffing Classic was much like their previous ones. In the 2019 version of the five-team round robin named after the boxed Thanksgiving staple, the Redskins came away with one victory and put a scare into the giants in their other three contests, including an overtime thriller against a close neighbor.

Nokomis' win came on Friday, Nov. 29, their last day at the tournament, which switched to Granite City for the final four games after the five schools hosted the first six. The Redskins put three players in double figures as they defeated Civic Memorial 38-27 to improve to 1-3 on the season.

The Nokomis defense was unbreakable in the opening quarter as Civic Memorial managed just two points in the opening eight minutes. On the offensive end, Alex Tosetti knocked down a three and a two to account for half of Nokomis' points as the Redskins held a 10-2 lead after one.

The opening frame would be the difference maker in the contest as the next three quarters would see the two teams separated by just three points. Both teams would score ten in the second quarter, as the Redskins held a 20-12 lead at the break.

Nokomis would outscore Civic Memorial by two in the third quarter and by one in the fourth quarter, despite two three-pointers by the aptly named Trey Hall, who had four threes and a team-best 14 points for the Eagles.

Carter Sabol would lead Nokomis with 13 points, while also pulling in nine boards. Alex Tosetti backed Sabol with 11 points, 11 rebounds and four steals, while Evan Herpstreith dished out five assists to go along with ten points.

Kendall Knodle and Nick Mascher also scored for Nokomis, with Knodle hitting a second quarter three and Mascher knocking down a free throw in the frame.

Taylorville

The victory came on the heels of a narrow 64-62 loss to Taylorville in overtime on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving on the Tornadoes' home court.

After falling behind 12-4 in the opening quarter, the Redskins scratched and clawed their way back into the contest, eventually taking a brief lead late in the fourth quarter.

The Skins shaved a point off the margin in the second quarter to make it 26-19 at halftime, then took off three more in the third quarter for a 39-35 score going into the fourth.

Nokomis would outscore the neighboring Tornadoes 18-14 in the final frame of regulation as they sent the contest to overtime, where Taylorville escaped with a two point win.

Carter Sabol would score 26 points and grab ten rebounds for Nokomis before fouling out, one of three Nokomis players to collect five fouls in the game.

Seth Johnson would add 11 points, while Alex Tosetti would have ten points and seven rebounds. Evan Herpstreith also had ten points, with Kendall Knodle (four) and Landon Engelman (one) also scored for Nokomis.

Triad

In their second game of the tournament, Nokomis fell to the Triad Knights of Troy by a 60-49 final score, but stuck with Knights point for point in the second half.

Triad would outscore Nokomis 13-5 in the first and 12-9 in the second to take a 25-14 lead into the locker room at the half. The Knights' Luke Cox would have 15 of his team's 25 points, en route to a team-best 22 for the game.

After a slow start, the Redskins would feed Carter Sabol in the second half as the senior forward stepped up his game and helped his team keep pace. Sabol scored 29 of his 31 points in the second half, netting 15 in the third quarter and 14 in the fourth. The 6'8" senior was a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line and hit a pair of threes to give the Redskins an inside-outside threat.

Sabol's success would be cancelled out in the final quarter by Triad's performance at the free-throw line as they hit 8-of-10 chances to remain in front.

Evan Herpstreith and Alex Tosetti would back Sabol with seven and six points, while Knedall Knodle (three) and Nick Mascher (two) also scored.

Nokomis will be back in action on Tuesday, Dec. 3, as they take on Okaw Valley in Bethany.
