Nokomis’ perfect start to the season survived by the skin of the Lady Redskins’ teeth on Thursday, Feb. 18, as they defeated East Alton-Wood River (EAWR) 56-53 in overtime.
All season the Lady Redskins have received solid performances from the young sophomores on their roster, but EAWR answered with a youngster of their own, guard Emily Johnson, who led all scorers with 26 points.
Six of Johnson’s points came in the first quarter as the Oilers held a slim 13-12 lead, despite Audrey Sabol getting six points of her own for Nokomis.
Both teams would see their big guns get shut down in the second frame as neither Johnson nor Sabol scored. Nokomis compensated with an attack from three-point land, with Mia Fesser and Addison Dangbar hitting threes, and four free throws by Emma Sneddon, who would go on to lead Nokomis in scoring with 14 points.
The Redskins would take a 26-22 lead into halftime, but would have work to do eight minutes later as Johnson caught fire and pushed her team out in front. Scoring 11 points in the quarter, Johnson helped EAWR to an 18-11 quarter and a 40-37 lead going into the fourth.
With all the youth talent on display, it would be a senior who would help keep the Redskins in the game as Kristen Stauder scored six points to lead Nokomis in scoring in the fourth. The Oilers would go 5-of-6 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter, but were held to just three field goals as the game went to overtime at 51 points apiece.
In the extra frame, Johnson would get East Alton-Wood River’s only basket, while Sneddon hit a pair of twos and Sabol added in a free throw to sew up the win.
Sabol would finish with 13 points, one behind Sneddon for the team lead, and also had ten rebounds. Sneddon chipped in a team-best four steals to go along with her 14 points.
Hailey Engelman would finish with nine points, while Kristen Stauder added eight points and a team-best 11 rebounds. She also had three steals, matching Addison Dangbar, who scored five points, for second most on the team.
Emily Cress (four) and Mia Fesser (three) also scored for the Lady Redskins, who moved to 5-0 on the season.
