Redskins Pull Away From Pawnee

Posted

The Nokomis Redskins picked up their seventh win in eight games on Tuesday, Feb. 11, with a 62-32 victory over an overmatched Pawnee squad.

Despite having just six players on their roster, Pawnee kept it close in the early going as they hit five threes (four from senior P.J. Berry) to trail the Redskins by just one point, 16-15, at the end of the first quarter.

The threes would keep coming for the Indians, with Berry hitting two more and Conner Henneman adding his second of the game, but Nokomis began to pull away from their shorthanded visitors. Evan Herpstreith and Jake Johnson, two of the six players to score in the opening frame for Nokomis, each put in six points in the Redskins’ 19-point second quarter, with Alex Tosetti (four) and Carter Sabol (three) accounting for the other seven points. Sabol would finish the half with nine points to lead Nokomis, who held a 35-24 lead at the break.

Any hopes of a miracle comeback for Pawnee went by the wayside in the second half as the Indians were held to just four points in each of the final two quarters. Nokomis would counter with 14 and 13 as they rolled to a 30 point win, their 18th of the season.

On offense, Nokomis spread the wealth, with four players finishing in double figures and seven players scoring all told. Sabol would finish with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Tosetti added 14 points and five steals in his first significant output since being sidelined with an injury.

Evan Herpstreith would add in 12 points, four steals and three assists, while Jake Johnson rounded out the quartet with ten points. Seth Johnson, who led the team in assists with six, would add four points, while Kendall Knodle and Cooper Bertolino each had two.

Now 18-9 on the season, the Redskins will be back at home on Saturday, Feb. 15, at 3 p.m. against Vandalia. The game will be streamed live on the “Nokomis CUSD22” YouTube channel.
