Redskins Rebound After Close Losses

After back-to-back close three-set losses to two Montgomery County rivals, the Nokomis volleyball team snapped a five game losing streak with a decisive two game win over Mt. Olive on Thursday, Sept. 30.

The Redskins took game one on the Wildcats’ home court by a 25-19 final score, then ran roughshod over their former Prairie State Conference foes by 12 (25-13) in game two.

Nokomis’ serving game was on point as senior Skylar Stewart had 12 points in the win. Addison Dangbar and Natalie Engelman chipped in seven and five points respectively, while Audrey Sabol added four.

Dangbar also put down five kills to lead Nokomis’ attack, while Audrey Sabol, Rean Ward and Hailey Engelman all had four kills each. Engelman also led the team in assists with 12, while Presley Lamb chipped in eight.

Defensively, Engelman and Lamb also carried the load, with Engelman posting 12 digs and Lamb adding in five.

The win was a relief after two thrillers against Hillsboro on Sept. 27 and Lincolnwood on Sept. 28, with both games played on the Redskins’ home floor.

Against the Toppers, Hillsboro would pick up a narrow 25-23 win in game one, only to have the Redskins rally back to win 19-25 in game two to force game three. The Toppers would go on to win game three by four points in a close 25-21 decision.

Hillsboro was led by Layne Rupert at the net as the junior hitter put down 11 kills on the night. Sophia Blankenship also had six kills, while Emilee Roemelin had 14 service points in the win. Defensively, Isabella White had 11 digs, followed by Rupert with eight and Roemelin and Kinley Richardson with seven each.

Nokomis had three players with double digit digs as Natalie Engelman (15), Emily Cress (10) and Presley Lamb (10) helped keep their team in the game. Hailey Engelman led the serving with 10 points, while Addison Dangbar (4), Audrey Sabol (4) and Skylar Stewart (3) combined for 11 kills.

The Lincolnwood game would also go down in three, but the scores were a little more in the Lancers’ favor in the wins. The visitors won game one 25-11 and game three 25-14, with Nokomis pulling out a 25-23 win in game two.

Hailee Belsher pounded home 20 kills for Lincolnwood, with Desi Pitchford adding eight and Haelee Damm chipping in six. Sidney Glick led the team in points with 15, followed by Pitchford with 11 and Avery Pope with seven, five of which came on aces. Defensively, Jasmine Vickery had 13 digs, while Haelee Damm added 11.

As they did against Hillsboro, Nokomis had a strong defensive effort against the Lincolnwood hitters, with Emily Cress (14), Addison Dangbar (12), Natalie Engelman (9) and Hailey Engelman (9) combining for 44 digs.

Hailey Engelman and Skylar Stewart led the team in points with six, while Rean Ward paced Nokomis with five kills. Presley Lamb had five assists in the narrow loss, while Hailey Engelman also had four assists and three kills.

Now 6-16 on the season, Nokomis will head to Pawnee on Monday, Oct. 4, for their next match, followed by a home bout against Tri-City/Sangamon Valley on Oct. 5.
