Last season, the Nokomis Redskins met the Neoga Indians in the regional championship game and never trailed from the opening tip. The same was true this year, as the Redskins took down the Indians 60-31 to win their second straight regional on Friday, Feb. 22.
The Skins got out to a hot start, scoring the first ten points of the game. But after the quick start, Neoga cut the deficit back to five at the end of the first quarter.
The Indians rode that momentum into the second quarter and cut the lead to one at 17-16. But just when everything seemed to be going downhill, the Redskins went on another 10-0 run to end the half with a 27-16 lead.
Neoga continued to keep the game within striking distance for most of the third quarter, but the Skins opened up a 20-point lead going into the final frame. Nokomis did exactly what they needed to do in the fourth quarter, slowing down the pace and hitting eight of their ten attempts from the charity stripe. The score ended at 60-31, giving the Redskins their second straight regional title and a trip to the Altamont Sectional.
The Skins were led by Carter Sabol with 18 points, while Alex Tosetti had 13 points and nine rebounds. Trevor Wright, who advanced in the three-point competition before the game, was the only other Redskin in double-figures with 12.
Mason Stewart had nine points, while Isaiah Bruder, Evan Herpstrieth, Benny Clavin and Jake Johnson all scored two to round out the scoring.
The Redskins move on to the Altamont Sectional on Tuesday, Feb. 26, and will play the St. Elmo/Brownstown Eagles at 7 p.m. The Eagles got an upset win over Altamont in their regional championship game and will come into sectionals with a 22-12 record. The other side of the sectional features a match-up between Central A&M and Odin.
