Redskins Roll In Abbreviated Plains Tourney

Posted

After a game against the host school of the Pleasant Plains Classic was rained out on Friday night, the Nokomis Redskins were re-scheduled to play two games on Saturday, April 7.

Solid all-around performances from the Skins earned them a 7-1 win against Beardstown and a 15-4 win over Holy Trinity.

First up was Beardstown, with the Skins putting Carter Sabol on the bump for his fourth start of the season. Sabol gave up a run in the first, but the Nokomis bats backed him up, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Sabol would settle in from there, throwing three shutout innings. In those three innings, the Skins would add two runs and take a 5-1 lead. Evan Herpstrieth came into relief for the Skins and picked up right where Sabol left off.

In the final three innings of the game, Nokomis picked up a couple of insurance runs, but Herpstrieth didn’t need them, as he held Beardstown scoreless to end the game at 7-1. Drew Masset had three hits, driving in three for the Skins.

The Redskins had to wait for Beardstown and Pleasant Plains to play before getting back out on the field to play Holy Trinity. Plains would win 9-1, sending Beardstown home 0-2.

The time in between games didn’t slow up the Redskin bats, though. As Nokomis starting pitcher Drew Masset continued to sit down opposing batters, the Skins scored more and more runs.

After gaining a 3-0 cushion through three innings, Nokomis broke out in the fourth, scoring 12 runs. The big inning virtually ended the game, as the Skins would go on to a 15-4 short-game win.

Masset threw four no-hit innings, while Alex Tosetti and Marc Grigoroff each had two hits for the Skins. Ryan Janssen also hit a home run, his second of the season.

The two wins are exactly what Nokomis needed, as they are now on a three-game win streak and have evened their record at 3-3. They have a busy week ahead of them, starting at Shelbyville on Monday and at Taylorville on Wednesday. Shelbyville will enter Monday’s game with a record of 7-6, while Taylorville currently sits at 8-3.
