The Nokomis Redskins had zero games over 70 points scored in their 30 regular season games, but after scoring 77 against Cowden-Herrick Beecher City on Feb. 25, the Skins picked up 71 points in their 20-point victory over Meridian on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at the Meridian Regional semifinal.
As they did the night before, the Nokomis offense came out as if they were shot out of a cannon on Wednesday, torching the Hawks for 21 points and taking an 11-point lead after eight minutes. After scoring a career-best 30 against the Bobcats, Alex Tosetti got off to a strong start with ten first quarter points, hitting a pair of threes and two two-pointers to lead the charge.
Tosetti would add another three in the second half, with Carter Sabol hitting his second three of the game as well. Sabol, who scored five in the first quarter, would finish with 11 for the half, second only to Tosetti’s 13 on the Redskins’ side of the scoreboard.
Nokomis would need all of those points to maintain their first quarter lead though, as Meridian got four threes from Riley Day and allowed the Redskins to add just one to their lead, with the score at 37-25 at halftime.
The Hawks would try to keep pace in the second half, hitting three more threes and posting quarters of 12 and 14, but Nokomis would outscore them by four in both quarters to finish off their 22nd win of the season.
Tosetti would add 11 second half points to his halftime total as he finished with 24 points on four threes, four twos and four free throws. Sabol was right there with Tosetti, scoring 22 points on three threes, five twos and three free throws. The dynamic duo also contributed in other facets, with Tosetti picking up five steals and Sabol grabbing 13 rebounds and dishing out five assists.
Jake Johnson and Evan Herpstreith nearly joined Sabol in double-double land. Herpstreith had eight points and 11 rebounds, while Johnson had nine points and nine boards. Kendall Knodle (five points), Seth Johnson (two points) and Landon Engelman (one point) rounded out the scoring for Nokomis, who improved to 22-10 going into Friday’s regional championship against Central A&M.
