On Dec. 20, the Nokomis Redskins took an 18-2 first quarter lead on the St. Elmo/Brownstown Eagles and never looked back, picking up a 57-41 win. The two teams met again in the Altamont Sectional on Tuesday night, Feb. 26, and the Redskins came out on top again by a score of 57-34.
In what has begun to be an every-game occurrence, the Redskins started the game in complete domination. They jumped out to a 13-0 lead, forcing an Eagles time out to regroup. Nate Philpot would hit a three for the Eagles, but those would be their only points in the first quarter, putting the Skins up 17-3 after one.
St. Elmo was able to keep pace in the second quarter, but a Carter Sabol corner three at the buzzer pushed the halftime lead up to 20 for the Redskins.
The Skins only outscored the Eagles by three points in the second half, but that was good enough to end the score at 57-34 and send them to their second straight Sweet Sixteen.
The Skins shot at a 50 percent clip from the field (23-for-46) and made seven of their eight free-throw attempts.
St. Elmo had no answer for Carter Sabol, who scored a game-high 24 points. Trevor Wright added ten points for the Redskins, along with eight rebounds and six assists.
The win gives Nokomis a rematch with the Central A&M Raiders, who knocked them out of the postseason last year in the Sweet Sixteen. The Raiders upped their record to 30-3 with a 54-40 victory over Odin Wednesday night. The winner of Friday night’s game at 7 p.m. will head to Carbondale next Tuesday, Mar. 3, to play for a trip to state.
