Redskins Stampede Past Ponies On Homecoming

The Nokomis Redskins continued their quest for their first playoff appearance since 2014 on Friday, Oct. 4, with a 42-14 thrashing of South Fork in Nokomis.

The Redskins used a stout running game that rushed for more than 300 yards for the third straight game and a couple South Fork turnovers to turn the game in their favor early.

All 42 of Nokomis’ points came in the first half as they scored 21 in the first quarter and 21 more in the second.

Adam Lyons rushed for a team-high 144 yards on just 12 carries and picked up the first of two rushing touchdowns to get Nokomis on the scoreboard first. Alex Tosetti would make the extra point kick after Lyons’ 18-yard scoring run that made it 7-0 in the home team’s favor.

Tosetti would find his way into the endzone for the Redskins second score, doing it on defense with the first of two interceptions for a pick-six for the senior. The Redskins defensive back would have 52 return yards on the two interceptions.

The Nokomis defense was far from done though as Adam Lyons scored on another interception return before the close of the first quarter. The score by Lyons, who also had two interceptions with 107 return yards in the game, would give Nokomis a 21-0 lead after one quarter.

While the South Fork offense had trouble finding their footing, the Nokomis run game pounded the ball with Lyons and fellow senior Ryan Janssen. The duo would rush for 256 yards on just 24 carries, with Janssen carrying the ball 12 times for 112 yards.

Tosetti would pick up his second score of the game to make it 28-0 on a seven-yard run, while Lyons made it 35-0 on a 15-yard gain. Sophomore Landon Engelman would put the mercy rule into play with a 17-yard score that gave Nokomis a 42-0 lead at the break.

The Ponies would get two touchdowns in the second half on passes from Hayden Prince to Shawn Goebel, but the running clock and Redskin defense kept them from getting any closer.

The win improved Nokomis’ record to 4-2 on the season after they started the year 1-2. They will host Martinsville, who is 2-4 on the season, on Friday, Oct. 11, with East Alton-Wood River (3-3) and Colfax Ridgeview (2-4) waiting in week eight and nine.
