In their last game before a break for the holidays, the Nokomis Redskins dismantled Mt. Olive on Friday, Dec. 20, in a 69-13 display of defensive dominance.
The Skins held the Wildcats to just 21 shots total, only five of which they made. Only three players would score for Mt. Olive, who was held scoreless in the second quarter.
The Redskins led 17-7 after one quarter, with Evan Herpstreith and Seth Johnson scoring six points apiece, followed by Carter Sabol with five. Trent Markezich (four) and Adam Knowles (three) would account for Mt. Olive's points, in what would be the Wildcats' most successful quarter.
By halftime the lead would grow to 29 as Nokomis shutout the Wildcats 19-0. Sabol added six more points to his total, with Herpstreith knocking down five. The pair would tie for the team lead in points at the half with 11 apiece.
Alex Tosetti and Nick Mascher also contributed in the second quarter, putting in four points apiece.
Tosetti would continue with a hot hand in the third quarter, scoring seven more points, while Sabol added eight for a team-best 19. The senior center would have a near perfect night on offense, going 8-for-10 from the field and 3-for-3 from the free-throw line, with 11 rebounds to go along with his 19 points.
Coach Steve Kimbro would go to his bench often in the second half, with Cooper Bertolino, Landon Engelman and Jake Johnson all scoring in the third quarter. All told, nine different Redskins would find the bottom of the net, with Ty Knodle adding his name to the scorebook with a three in the fourth.
Alex Tosetti would back Sabol with 11 points, five steals and four assists, while Evan Herpstreith added 13. Seth Johnson would finish with seven, followed by Nick Mascher, Jake Johnson, Landon Engelman and Cooper Bertolino with four each and Ty Knodle with three.
With the win, their third in a row, Nokomis improves to 4-5 on the season. The Skins won't play again until Jan. 7, when they will host Litchfield, followed by a road trip to East Alton-Wood River on Wednesday, Jan. 8.
