Robert (Bob) Clarence Schumacher, 78, of Highland, formerly of Alhambra, died Saturday, Aug. 29, 2020, at HSHS St. Elizabeth Hospital in O’Fallon.

A private funeral service will be held at a later date with interment in Harris Cemetery in Alhambra. Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Mr. Schumacher was born April 25, 1942, in Granite City, to Clarence Andrew and Gertie (Sandcork) Schumacher. His mother died when he was a child and his father remarried Hera Vasil in 1948. He married Jacquelin (Jackie) Parrish on June 16, 1962, and she preceded him in death.

He and his wife moved to Alhambra two years after their marriage, where he enjoyed working on the farm, as well as an electrician at A.O. Smith. Around the same time, he and his wife began a family and, in 1971, they built a house on a small farm south of Alhambra, where they and their two children lived until moving to Highland in 1997. He and his wife bought and renovated the historically recognized home on 13th Street named “Finally.”

He was also an electrician for the Coffeen Power Plant and McDonnell-Douglas before retiring from Boeing. An avid wood carver, he loved his camper and traveling to the Appalachian Mountains. He loved his wife and children, and was a wonderful father and husband.

A founding member of Highland Hope United Methodist Church and most recently attended the Mosaic Church in Highland. He loved to regale others with stories of his growing up, travels and American History.

He was a regular wood carver in the Glen Carbon Community Center Carving Group and could regularly be seen carving as he sat in his garage, talking to all who would stop by and check out his latest work.

Mr. Schumacher is survived by his son, Kyle Andrew (Kathleen) Schumacher; grandson, Christian Robert Schumacher; and grandchildren, Abraham, Danielle and Miriam Kemper.

In addition to his parents, stepmother and wife, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Elise.

Memorials may be made to the Multiple Myeloma Foundation, a cause he and his wife cared deeply about since his diagnosis in April 2008.
