Roger Ray Baxter, 76, of Raymond, died on Monday, Feb. 17, 2020, at 3:55 a.m. at Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy.

Visitation will be held Sunday, Feb. 23, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Plummer Funeral Home in Litchfield. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, Feb. 24, beginning at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Martin Miller of Raymond Christian Church officiating. Burial will follow, beginning at 1 p.m. at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield.

Mr. Baxter was born Jan. 13, 1944, in DuQuin, to Robert Joseph and Jennie Mae (Wilks) Baxter. He married Barbara Anne Kerfront on Nov. 6, 1965, and she preceded him in death on March 28, 2005.

He graduated from Pawnee High School with the class of 1962, and served his country in the U.S. Air Force, touring during the Vietnam War.

During his career, Mr. Baxter worked as a coal miner at Peabody Coal Mine-Pawnee #10 for several years. He then worked for Peabody Coal Mine in Marissa until his retirement in 1999.

He was a member of Raymond Christian Church, American Legion Post 299 in Raymond and the VFW Post 4495 in Taylorville. He enjoyed deer hunting, playing the guitar, riding motorcycles and he loved to fish.

Mr. Baxter is survived by his son, Anthony R. (Linda) Baxter of Raymond; daughter, Kimberly Ann (John) Packwood of Ames, IA; brother, James Robert Baxter of Pawnee; two sisters, Linda Kay (James) Woolory of Pawnee and Carolyn Ann (Gary) Price of Decatur; three grandchildren, Karsun Baxter, Kahra (husband Christopher “Patrick”) Taylor-Allen and Kayla Taylor-Ingram; and eight great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and  sister, Sondra Sue Achenbach.
