Part of Route 185 will be closed beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, Nov. 29, to repair the subsided section of the highway east of Graham Correctional Center.
According to officials at Deer Run Mine, the repairs will make the subsided section of the highway better able to withstand the coming winter weather. Work should take no longer than a week, and the highway is expected to open again on Friday, Dec. 3.
The road closure is south of the entrance to the prison so traffic will not be restricted entering the facility.
According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), Deer Run Mine will fund the work on Illinois 185 and all repairs. The contractor hired by the mine to complete the repairs will post and maintain a detour using North 9th and Coffeen Road.
Only local traffic will be permitted on the closed portion of Route 185 during the repairs.
The mine anticipates that the Illinois Department of Transportation will approve permanent repairs on the highway to begin next spring or summer.
