The Hillsboro eighth grade girls basketball team saw their season come to an end on Wednesday, Dec. 11, just one step short of state.
Playing Roxana at the Vandalia Sectional, the Lady Dragons led 6-4 after the first quarter and 14-10 at halftime. The Shells would come back in the third quarter though, doubling their point output and tying the game at 20-20 going into the fourth.
Roxana would have a 26-24 lead with just over a minute left in the game, but Hillsboro would tie the score at 26 to send the contest to overtime. In the extra period, the Shells would pull away to score a 40-29 victory and move on to the Class 3A eighth grade IESA State Tournament at Germantown Hills Middle School.
Hillsboro finished the season with 16 wins and just three losses.
Hillsboro Seventh Grade
The Hillsboro seventh grade girls basketball team saw their season come to an end on Wednesday, Dec. 4, in a hard fought sectional loss to Staunton.
The Lady Dragons were 15-2 coming into the game and lost by just two points to the undefeated Staunton girls, 29-27, at the Vandalia Sectional.
The Hillsboro girls can take solace in the fact that they gave the Terriers their closest game of the postseason by far. Staunton won their two regional games by 23 and 16 and have run roughshod through the state pairings.
On Saturday, Dec. 7, they defeated Beecher 45-13 to advance to the semifinals, where they defeated Teutopolis 36-19 to improve to 24-0 on the season. They will take on another undefeated squad, Quincy St. Peter, in the IESA Class 7-3A championship game at Auburn High School on Thursday, Dec. 12.
Eighth Grade Results
While the Hillsboro eighth graders extended their season past the first round of the postseason, the other three Montgomery County girls basketball teams saw their seasons come to an end in regionals.
Nokomis, the third seed in the Class 8-2A Central A&M Regional, won their first game over sixth seeded Pawnee 29-13, but lost a squeaker to second seeded Findlay Okaw Valley 24-23 in their regional semifinal.
Lincolnwood, the fifth seed at the Class 8-1A Pana Sacred Heart Regional, would fall to fourth seeded Mulberry Grove by a 28-14 final score.
Litchfield, the sixth seed at the Class 8-3A Pana Regional, fell to South Fork in their opening game by a 35-18 final score.
