The Calvary Saints made 14-of-23 free throws in the fourth quarter to hand Lincolnwood a 46-39 loss on Friday, Feb. 14.
Calvary’s defense was key in the opening quarter of the game, as they held the visitors from Montgomery County’s panhandle to just four points to take a 10-4 lead. Lincolnwood would get on track in the second though, outscoring Calvary 11-8 behind six points from Shawn Goebel.
The Saints were able to squash that momentum though, holding Lincolnwood to just five points in the third quarter as they took a 27-20 lead after three quarters.
The Lancers would try to mount a comeback in the final eight minutes, with Goebel leading the charge. The Morrisonville senior would score 13 of his game-high 23 points in the fourth quarter, with contributions from Cole Sidwell and Sam Herman leading to Lincolnwood’s 19-point quarter.
Unfortunately, Calvary matched the Lancers point for point, with all but five coming from the charity stripe. Evan Noggle would lead the charge in the fourth, making eight of his ten free throw chances to finish with 14 points, matching Brennan Crowder for the team-high.
In addition to the 23 from Goebel, Lincolnwood also got seven from Cole Sidwell, five from Sam Herman, three from Jhadyn Walker and one from Braden Whalen.
The loss dropped the Lancers to 17-11 on the season with two games to go. Lincolnwood will finish out the season at home against Greenfield-Northwestern on Tuesday, Feb. 18, and Edinburg on Thursday, Feb. 20.
Tuesday’s game could be a regional preview for the Lancers, who will be at home for the first round of the postseason as the regional hosts. Lincolnwood and Greenfield-Northwestern will both start regional play on Tuesday, Feb. 25, with the Lancers playing Mt. Olive at 6 p.m. and the Tigers playing Bunker Hill at 7:30 p.m. The winners then move on to the semifinals on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at 7:30 p.m.
Calhoun, the top seed in the subsectional, will play the winner of Monday’s game between Carrollton and Brussels in the other semifinal, with the regional championship set for Friday, Feb. 28, at 7 p.m.
