One person was killed and three others were injured in a two-vehicle accident at Coffeen Road and North 9th Avenue, east of Hillsboro and north of Coffeen, at 6:46 p.m. Saturday, June 15.

Matthew M. Schwab, 42, of Mt. Olive, was transported from the scene by Arch helicopter and pronounced dead at St. John's Hospital in Springfield later that evening at 9:24 p.m.

Cortney Gray, 19, of Greenville, was also taken by Arch to a Springfield hospital, while Mitchell L. Durbin, 20, of Nokomis, and a juvenile were transported by Hillsboro Area Ambulance Service.

According to Montgomery County Sheriff Rick Robbins, Schwab was eastbound in a 2012 Kia on 9th Avenue and did not stop at the intersection with Coffeen Road, where Durbin, northbound in a 2001 Pontiac, was unable to avoid a collision.  Gray and the juvenile were passengers in Durbin's car.  Both vehicles struck a power pole after the initial impact and came to rest in a field.

Six Coffeen firefighters responded and were on the scene for two hours.  The Hillsboro Fire Department was called in mutual aid with 16 responders.

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office completed the investigation of the accident.
