Schwab Earns Regional Redemption, Sectional Spot

Last year, regionals were a low point for what was otherwise a phenomenal freshman year for Litchfield’s Tug Schwab. On Wednesday, Sept. 29, at the Marquette Regional at Spencer T. Olin Golf Course in Alton, Schwab made up for last year and then some.

The Litchfield sophomore shot a 6-over-par 78 in Alton, good enough for a top five finish as he tied Carlinville’s Henry Kufa for the fifth spot overall in the 74-golfer tournament.

That round was also tied for the second best round among those not on a sectional qualifying team, meaning that Schwab will be heading to the sectionals on Monday, Oct. 4, at Green Hills Golf Course in Mt. Vernon.

The Panthers’ ace nearly had more company as Litchfield finished fourth with a 350, just five strokes behind Father McGivney for the third and final qualifying team spot. Vandalia was first at the tournament with a 320, while Alton Marquette was second with a 337 on their home course.

Ian Otto and Brawly Jacobs came even closer as they shot a pair of 90s to finish tied with Hillsboro’s Drake Vogel and Dominic Haggard and Lincolnwood’s Will Jenkins in a battle for the final three playoff spots. Unfortunately for Otto and Jacobs, the other three won out in the all-Montgomery County playoff, ending their seasons by the slimmest margins.

AJ Odle was just behind his teammates, finishing with a 92, the first score to miss the playoffs, while Zach Boston shot a 93, giving Litchfield five players in the top 30 overall. Keegan Marten finished his day with a 111, good for 55th spot for the Panthers.

While Schwab will be the only one making the trip to sectionals, the future is bright for the Litchfield boys golf program. All six players who teed off on Wednesday are underclassmen for the Panthers, meaning that a sectional spot (and maybe beyond) may be in the cards in the not too distant future.
