Schwab Medals Twice To Pace Panthers

The Litchfield boys golf team picked up two more wins over South Central Conference competition on Monday, Sept. 14, as the Panthers continue to be sparked by the new additions to their team.

For the third time this season, Litchfield was led by Tug Schwab, who shot a 6-over-par 41 to take the top individual spot at the home meet and lead the Panthers to a 182 as a team.

Carlinville would finish second to the host Panthers with a 198, while Southwestern was third with a 237.

The youth movement didn’t stop there though as freshman AJ Odle was Litchfield’s number two man with a 45, while sophomore Zach Boston was third best for the Panthers with a 46.

Senior Cam Frerichs would be Litchfield’s fourth scorer with a 50, while Ryan Baugher and Drew Hartzell also played, shooting rounds of 54 and 56.

Overall, Litchfield would have four of the top six rounds, with only Carlinville’s Henry Kufa (43) and Ayden Tiburzi (50) breaking the LHS lock on the top spots.

At Timber Lakes

The Panthers would replicate the feat the following day as they picked up wins over Staunton and Greenville in a match that went down to the wire.

Litchfield finished their round at Timber Lakes Golf Course in Staunton with a 173, narrowly edging the host Bulldogs and Greenville, who each shot 176.

Three different Panthers would shoot season-best rounds on Tuesday, including Tug Schwab, who took medalist honors for the match. Schwab shot a 2-under-par 34 on the day to post the lowest individual score by five strokes. Preston Denny of Staunton would be the only other player in the 30s, shooting a 39.

Freshman AJ Odle would also have a season-best with a 44, as did Drew Hartzel, who finished with a 48. Zach Boston also shot a 48 on the day, while senior Cam Frerichs added a scoring round with a 47. Ryan Baugher rounded out the LHS lineup with a 54 in the sixth slot.

In addition to the varsity teams, the Litchfield JV also got some time on the fairways and broke 200. Ian Otto led the team with a 45, followed by Keagan Marten (49), Blaine Stewart (50), Brawly Jacobs (50), Kelvin Dooley (57) and Allen Schneider (58).

“COVID-19 has really changed the complexion of school life this fall, but tonight showed that our schools are still being represented by outstanding, hard working kids,” Coach Dan Newkirk said. “Great night for high school sports.”

Litchfield’s next match will be Monday, Sept. 21, at Indian Springs in a tune-up for the South Central Conference Tournament, which will take place at the same course on Sept. 29.
