With the exception of one half inning, the Nokomis/Lincolnwood softball game on April 9 was pretty much dead even. It was in that half inning though that the Lady Redskins made their move and carried away a 13-5 victory over the rival Lancers.
Nokomis plated eight runs in the top of the second inning to break a 0-0 tie and take a commanding lead over the home team in Raymond.
Errors and the bat of senior Maddie Sowarsh proved to be particularly painful to the Lancers in the second as both led to multiple runs.
After Lincolnwood starter Sydney Herman got the first out of the inning on a foul pop to the catcher, Mia Fesser singled to center and made it all the way to third when the ball skirted through the Lincolnwood centerfielder's legs.
Karlie Wanger would walk and attempted to steal second. The Lancers would try to pick Fesser off at third, but the throw was off line and went into the outfield, allowing Fesser to score and Wanger to move to third.
A single by Alexa Cassidy drove in Wanger to make it 2-0 and Sophia Keller became the third straight batter to reach base when the throw to first on her bunt was uncatchable. Emma Hill would keep the run going as she reached on another error, allowing Cassidy to score for the third run of the inning.
With two on and one out, Sowarsh drove a high fly ball to left field that cleared the fence and gave Nokomis a 6-0 lead. The Lancers would get the next out, but back-to-back singles by Emily Cesaretti and Delaney Keiser brought Fesser to the plate for the second time and the Redskin shortstop ripped a two-run double to left to make it 8-0.
Lincolnwood would get one of those runs back in the second inning though, with Sadie Slightom singling to start the inning and scoring on a two-out base hit by Marisa Webb three batters later.
The Redskins would continue to add to their lead in the third and fourth innings, though not with the voracity of the surge in the second frame. Sophia Keller reached on an error in the third inning and scored on a double by Emma Blaum. Nokomis nearly had two runs in the inning, but a nice throw from Sadie Slightom in left to catcher Brittney Slightom caught Sowarsh trying to score from first on Blaum's hit.
The Redskins would get another run in the top of the fourth inning after a walk to Keiser, a single by Fesser, an unsuccessful fielder's choice off Wanger's bat and a walk to Keller pushed in a run. Sadie Slightom would come on in relief of Herman and get the final out of the inning with the bases loaded to end the threat.
After picking up just two hits off Sowarsh, Nokomis' starting pitcher, in the first four innings, Lincolnwood would have some success in the bottom of the fifth.
Herman ripped a double to start the frame and Sidney Glick singled up the middle to move her to third. Nokomis got a defensive break when Brittney Slightom sent a hard liner to short, which Fesser turned into a double play when Glick strayed too far off first base.
The inning wasn't done yet though as Cassie Krager singled to score Herman from third. Krager would put herself in scoring position with a stolen base and scored on a single by Sadie Slightom to make it 10-3.
Slightom would move to second when Maggie McClelland reached on an error, and both runners would move up two bases on two wild pitches, with Slightom scoring to make it 10-4.
Sowarsh would get the final out on a grounder to third though, as Nokomis still held a six-run lead after five innings.
Following a scoreless sixth, Nokomis would seemingly put the game away with two runs in the seventh off a single, two straight fielder's choices, an error and a double by Delaney Keiser. Keiser would add a third run moments later after Fesser picked up her fourth hit of the game to make it 13-4.
Lincolnwood would get one of those runs back in the seventh when Cassie Krager singled, moved to second and third on a wild pitch and a passed ball, and scored on a single by Sadie Slightom, her third of the day.
Sowarsh would get back-to-back ground balls to Wanger at third after that, though, both of which resulted in outs to end the game.
Mia Fesser would be one of three players with multiple hits for Nokomis as she went 4-for-5 with a run scored and three driven in. Delaney Keiser would go 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs, while Maddie Sowarsh was 2-for-4 with a run scored and three driven in. Sowarsh also had four strikeouts on the mound for the Redskins.
Sadie Slightom and Cassie Krager had five of Lincolnwood's eight hits, with Slightom going 3-for-4 and Krager going 2-for-4, with both scoring twice and driving in two RBIs.
Lincolnwood will continue their string of Montgomery County opponents on Thursday as they host Hillsboro. They will be back home on Friday to take on Bunker Hill.
Nokomis will be at Taylorville on April 11, host Edinburg on April 12 and play in their home tournament on April 13. The Redskins will play Vandalia in the opening game at 10 a.m., followed by either Pana or St. Elmo/Brownstown at noon.
