It's been a slow start to the season for the Nokomis boys basketball team, but the Redskins seem to have gained some momentum now as they picked up their second win in a row with a 62-29 victory over Southwestern at the T. Todt Shootout in Raymond on Saturday, Dec. 14.
The Redskins fed Carter Sabol time and time again on Saturday, with the Nokomis senior racking up 33 points and 12 rebounds in the win.
Sabol had 15 of those points in the first quarter, all 15 points that Nokomis scored in the frame, as the Redskins held a 11-point lead after eight minutes.
Sabol would add five more points in the second quarter, but Nokomis spread the wealth around as Evan Herpstreith added four and the trio of Kendall Knodle, Seth Johnson and Jake Johnson added two apiece for a second straight 15-point frame.
Southwestern nearly doubled their first quarter output, but still trailed 30 to 11 at halftime. They would do even better in the third, scoring 14 points, with Brady Salzman and Keegan Rowell adding five points apiece, but managed to shave just one point off the Nokomis lead.
The Redskins added a three-point threat in the third quarter as Alex Tosetti hit two threes for nearly half of his team's 13 points. Sabol added in four points, while Seth Johnson chipped in three for a 43-25 Nokomis lead.
Any thoughts of a fourth-quarter comeback by the Birds were quickly dispatched by Nokomis, who outscored Southwestern 19-4 in the final frame, holding them to just four free throws.
Tosetti and Sabol would account for 17 of the 19 points, with Jake Johnson adding the other two.
Sabol's total moved him into a tie for second on the school's all-time scoring list, matching the 1,701 scored by 1965 graduate Rick Brueckner. Brueckner held the school scoring lead for 32 years before his mark was broken by 1997 grad Mike Havera, who finished with 1,859 points for his career.
Tosetti would finish with 14 points and three steals, while Evan Herpstreith added four points, four rebounds and seven assists. Seth Johnson also had four rebounds and three steals to go along with five points, while Jake Johnson (four points) and Kendall Knodle (two points) rounded out the scoring. Brady Salzman would lead Southwestern with seven points as the Piasa Birds were held under 30 points for the second straight game.
The Redskins have two more games before a break for the holidays. On Tuesday, Dec. 17, the Skins will travel to Pana, followed by another road trip on Dec. 20, to Mt. Olive.
