Sixteen teams came together and dedicated Friday and Saturday, Sept. 13-14 for a great cause, and even greater family, the family of Grace Herschelman and her battle with INAD.
This annual event, hosted in Lincolnwood and Nokomis this year, has raised thousands of dollars for research for the battle against INAD. Four pools were created out of the sixteen teams. Two pools played in Lincolnwood and two played in Nokomis.
The Redskins were placed in a pool with Roxana, Calvary Academy and Auburn. Calvary would be up first on Friday and the Redskins were up for the test. Clicking in all areas, the Skins put the Saints away in two sets, grabbing their first victory of the season.
Next would be a tough Auburn Trojan team, the champions from last years tourney. Proving why they were the defending champs, Auburn put Nokomis away with several kills and serves, topping the ladies in two sets.
The third and final game was against another top team, the Roxana Shells.
The Shells were skilled and active and Nokomis had no answers for them. By defeating the Redskins, Roxana finished in first place in the pool with a 3-0 record. Auburn finished in second with a 2-1 record, Nokomis third at 1-2 and Calvary last with a record of 0-3.
On day two, Nokomis would move to the Bronze Bracket with the three other third place finishers, Father McGivney, St. Elmo/Brownstown and Morrisonville.
The Redskins were matched up against Father McGivney at noon. It looked promising early, as the Skins held a small lead. But McGivney would respond and take two straight sets, by the same score of 25-18.
The loss would put Nokomis in a 1 p.m. match against St. Elmo and would be the final game of the tourney for the Redskins.
Once again, Nokomis showed hope in set one. Gaining the lead to start the final match, St. Elmo found their groove and holes in the Redskin defense and grabbed the win 25-17, 25-16. The loss dropped Nokomis to 1-4 in the tourney.
In the Gold Bracket, Staunton would beat Roxana to win this year's title.
Nokomis vs. Meridian
Looking to enter the win column on Thursday, Sept. 12, Nokomis hosted the Hawks from Meridian on the volleyball court.
That first win for the Skins looked promising early, as the ladies were moving and hitting with confidence.
A back and forth battle over the net, with some intense volleys, had the Nokomis student section on their feet. The atmosphere was great, but the outcome was still the same in the end.
The Hawks used a streak of six straight serves to take the first set 25-20. Riding the momentum into set two, Meridian would escape the Redskins again and keep Nokomis out of the win column, 25-17.
Macee Eisenbarth had five points and three kills and six digs, Presley Lamb added five points and eight assists, Delaney Keiser four points and four digs.
