The Nokomis Redskins overcame an early deficit to score 24 second half points en route to a 31-24 win over Sullivan/Okaw Valley in week one of the high school football season.
Playing in Sullivan on Friday, Aug. 30, Nokomis found themselves in an early hole after a 69-yard touchdown run by the home team made it 7-0 after one quarter of play.
Nokomis would tie the game up in the second with a three-yard run by Ryan Janssen, but Sullivan regained the lead later in the quarter to make it 14-7 going into the break.
In the second half, Nokomis would cut the lead to one with a one-yard touchdown reception from Alex Tosetti to Adam Lyons, set up by an earlier 13-yard run.
An interception by Connor Overby would help Nokomis get the ball back and pull ahead for the first time in the game as Tosetti took the snap and busted through the line for an 85-yard touchdown, making it 19-14 in Nokomis' favor.
Adam Lyons would add to that lead with a 35-yard run that made it 25-14, before a 30-yard field goal by Sullivan cut the margin down to eight.
With two touchdowns already under his belt, Lyons would add a third for Nokomis, this time catching a pass from Tosetti for a 19-yard score, Nokomis' last of the contest.
Up 31-17, Nokomis would yield a fourth quarter touchdown to bring the opposition within seven, but the defense kept Sullivan out of the endzone in the final minutes to preserve the win.
The Redskins would rush for nearly 300 yards on the ground, with 38 carries for 295 yards. Tosetti would have 129 yards on six carries, while Janssen had 101 yards on 23. Lyons (six carries, 58 yards) and Landon Engelman (three carries, seven yards) had the rest.
That group also carried the passing attack, with Tosetti throwing for 66 yards on 7-of-14 passing. Lyons had five catches for 36 yards, while Janssen and Engelman had one each for 26 and four yards respectively.
Defensively, Janssen had 13 tackles, while Quentin Jamieson added eight. Braeston Brummet had five tackles, including a sack.
Next week, Nokomis takes on Central A&M in Moweaqua. The Raiders are also 1-0 after beating Westville 41-6.
