Slightom Helps Lancers Walk Off With Win

Posted

Lincolnwood's Sadie Slightom struck out seven batters on the mound, and drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning, to give the Lady Lancers a 9-8 victory over Lanphier on Monday, April 22.

The two teams took turns with scoring surges as Lanphier took a 6-0 lead after three innings, only to see Lincolnwood cut that deficit to one by the bottom of the fifth.

The scoring started for the Lancers in the fourth, when Cassie Krager tripled and Slightom reached on an error. Lanphier would get the next two outs, but a single by Desi Pitchford would drive in Krager to make it 6-1.

Katelyn Payne would follow Pitchford with a triple, plating two more runs and making it 6-3.

Lanphier would get another run in the top of the fifth, but Lincolnwood rallied again in the bottom half of the inning. Sidney Glick would walk to start the inning, while both Brittney Slightom and Cassie Krager reached on errors. All three would come around to score, with Maggie McClelland picking up an RBI single later in the inning.

The score would remain 7-6 until the seventh inning, when Lanphier added an insurance run. It would prove to be much needed as the Lady Lancers rattled the bats to extend the game to extra innings. After a double by McClelland, Marisa Webb moved her to third with a ground ball to short.

Savannah Bowman would hit a sacrifice fly to make it a one-run game, but Lincolnwood was down to their last out. Payne, who had a single and a triple in her previous three at-bats, picked up her second three-bagger of the day, then scored on a passed ball to make it 8-8 and send the game to the eighth inning.

Slightom would give up a two-out hit in the top of the eighth, but struck out the Lions' number nine hitter to end the threat. With the top of the order up, Glick walked and Brittney Slightom reached on an error. After a double steal, Lanphier would intentionally walk Cassie Krager to load the bases and bring up Sadie Slightom.

On a 2-0 count, Slightom would rip a single to center field and send the Lincolnwood faithful home happy.

The Lancers were outhit in the game 11-8, but made the most of Lanphier's six errors as seven of the nine runs they scored were unearned. In addition to Payne's 3-for-4 day, Maggie McClelland would also have two hits in the win.

Morrisonville

Hopes were high that a third straight win was in the cards for the Lancers after victories over Lanphier and Vandalia, but the visiting Mohawks of Morrisonville had other ideas and escaped with an 8-4 victory.

The visitors from Christian County picked up three runs in the first inning, two of which came on a two-run homer by Hallie Schneider, and two more in the top of the fourth to take a 5-0 lead.

Lincolnwood rallied to cut the lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth, with a single by Marisa Webb, a walk by Katelyn Payne, and a two-run double by Sydney Herman.

After escaping danger in the fifth, Lincolnwood scored two more runs when Cassie Krager singled, Sadie Slightom doubled her home, and Savannah Bowman drove in Slightom's courtesy runner, Shelby Hattenbach, after reaching on an error.

Down just 5-4 now, Lincolnwood looked to hold the Mohawks in the sixth inning, but two singles and a three-run home run by Caitlin Clarke kept that from happening, as Morrisonville increased their lead to 8-4.

The Lancers would go in order in the sixth and would get a hit in the seventh, but Marisa Webb's single came with two outs, and a pop up to second ended any hopes of a rally.

Webb would finish the game 3-for-4 at the plate with three singles, while Sadie Slightom and Sydney Herman had a single and a double each.

Herman would give up eight runs on 14 hits and four walks, while striking out three batters in six innings. Webb would pitch the final inning for Lincolnwood and got out all three batters she would face, one on strikes.

The Lancers will have another chance at Morrisonville on Thursday, April 25, followed by a home game against North Mac on Friday, April 26.
