South Central Foes Clip Mohawks

The Morrisonville High School baseball team fell to 0-4 on the season with a pair of losses to South Central Conference competition on March 18 and March 19.

On Monday, March 18, the Mohawks ran into a buzzsaw in the form of the Staunton Bulldogs, who scored eight runs in the third inning en route to an 11-0 five inning win.

The Mohawks were held to one hit, a two-out single by Shawn Goebel in the top of the third. Junior pitcher Devin Ray would get out of the inning though, coaxing a ground out from Evan Hopper for out number three.

Ray and teammate Zach Ury would combine for the shutout for Staunton, allowing three walks for the other Morrisonville base runners. Ray pitched the first three innings and struck out seven, while Ury punched out two more in his two innings of work.

Morrisonville would start Michael Jones, who went two and a third innings, allowing seven runs on five hits and three walks, while striking out one.

Staunton got three runs in the first inning on two walks, two singles and a double, but could have gotten more had it not been for a 4-3 double play turned by Morrisonville's Jhadyn Walker and Dalton Thomas.

After a scoreless second, the Bulldogs would strike again. A double, a hit batter, a single and a wild pitch chased Jones from the mound and gave Staunton a 5-0 lead.

Staunton would touch up Sam Herman for five more hits as their lead grew to 11-0 by the end of the inning. Two of those runs were credited to Jones, with Herman responsible for the other four.

Shawn Goebel would pitch the fourth inning for Morrisonville, allowing one hit and striking out one in a scoreless inning.

Carlinville

After the short game in Staunton, the Mohawks looked to rebound at home against Carlinville on Tuesday, March 19.

Despite a late rally by the Mohawks, Carlinville would claim a 5-3 victory to keep Morrisonville out of the win column.

Carlinville would stake themselves to a 4-1 lead after four innings, getting solo runs in the second and third and two runs in the top of the fourth.

Morrisonville's first run came in the bottom of the third without the benefit of a hit as Jhett Walker reached on an error and was replaced on the base paths by pinch runner Austin Gwinn. Gwinn would move to second after Andrew Skinner was hit by a pitch, then to third when Evan Hopper walked.

During Dade Pitchford's at-bat, Gwinn would come in to score on a wild pitch, making the score 2-1 at the time. Pitchford would walk to load the bases, but Carlinville starter Tucker Hughes got out of the inning with a strikeout to keep it a one run game.

The Cavies would tack on an insurance run in the sixth inning, but Morrisonville tried to come back in the bottom of the seventh.

With Hughes still on the mound, Skinner reached on an error, Shawn Goebel walked and Evan Hopper doubled to cut the lead to 5-2. Ayden Tiburzi would come on in relief of Hughes and got the first out, but Morrisonville still had runners on second and third.

Sam Herman would make out number two on a ground out, but Goebel scored and Hopper moved to third. Jhadyn Walker would work Tiburzi for a 12-pitch at-bat, but grounded out to short to end the game.

The Mohawks were outhit 10-3 in the game, with Kyle Dixon and Ethan Trimm both picking up two hits for the Cavies. Andrew Skinner and Sam Herman would both have singles, while Hopper's double was the Mohawks' lone extra-base hit.

On the mound, Skinner started the game and gave up four runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk, while striking out five batters in four innings. Herman pitched two innings in relief, striking out two batters and giving up one run on three hits, while Shawn Goebel threw a scoreless seventh, allowing one hit and one walk.

Weather permitting, Morrisonville has three home games scheduled to end the week. On Thursday, March 21, they will host Shelbyville, followed by Decatur Lutheran on Friday, March 22, and Litchfield on Saturday, March 23. The first two games start at 4:30 p.m., with the Saturday tilt beginning at 11 a.m.
