Springfield Cyclist Killed In I-55 Accident

A Springfield man was killed in a motorcycle accident on Interstate 55 near the Carlinville exit at 12:25 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1.

Ronald E. Ames, 75, of Springfield, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Montgomery County Coroner's Office.

According to Illinois State Police, a 2013 Chevy Suburban pulling a U-Haul trailer, driven by John A. Owen, 41, of Bloomington, had slowed in traffic while northbound on I-55.  A vehicle behind the U-Haul abruptly switched lanes, and Ames, riding a 2013 Honda Goldwing behind the vehicle that had changed lanes, did not see the slowed trailer in time to avoid colliding with it in the rear.

The Raymond-Harvel Fire Department was dispatched to the accident.  Nine answered the call and three went to the scene for an hour.

An investigation into the accident continues by the Illinois State Police and Montgomery County Coroner Rick Broaddus.
