Steven Eugene Porter, 67, of Taylor Springs, died at home on Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2026.
Graveside services will be held at Cedar Ridge Cemetery in Honey Bend on Wednesday, Aug. 19, at 1 p.m., with David Baker officiating. Hough-Dean Funeral Home is serving the family.
Mr. Porter was a son of Paul and Norma (Stolte) Porter, born on May 29, 1959, in Nokomis, his mother survives. He graduated from Hillsboro High School and attended Lincoln Land College. He proudly served his country with the National Guard and was employed with the State of Illinois as corrections officer for 30 years before his retirement. For a time, he also owned and operated Porter’s Lawn Care, serving the Taylor Springs and Hillsboro areas. In June of 1996, he married Verna (Baker) Porter, and she preceded him in death.
In his free time, he loved fishing and taking his boat out on the lake. He also enjoyed hunting mushrooms, deer and wild boar. He had a laid back, magnetic personality, which drew people to him. He had quite a sense of humor and was considered very funny. He loved to tell jokes and entertain everyone with his stories. He cared deeply for his family and he will be greatly missed.
In addition to his mother, Mr. Porter is survived by his only child, Shelby Porter of Hillsboro; sisters, Sandy (Todd) Grider of Springfield and Debra Johnson of Taylorville;and step-grandchildren, David and Kristie.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Verna; father, Paul; and brother-in-law, Dave Johnson.
