Strong First Quarter Helps Lancers Weather Storm

Posted

A strong start put Lincolnwood up big early as the Lancers claimed a 51-32 victory over Sangamon Valley.

The Lancers weathered the Storm, so to speak, holding Sangamon Valley to just two field goals and six points in the first quarter.

On the other end of the floor, the Lancers got to the basket, either converting on their chances or drawing fouls as they were 6-of-7 from the free-throw line. Cole Sidwell had five points in the quarter, with Sam Herman and Shawn Goebel adding four each.

The Lancers continued to get to the line in the second quarter, going 7-of-9 from the charity stripe, with Goebel making five of the seven chances. His seven points and five from Herman would help Lincolnwood to a 33-18 halftime lead over the Storm.

The march to the free-throw line slowed in the second half, but Lincolnwood found their range from behind the arc as they hit three three-pointers in the third. Goebel, Devin Brown and Sidwell all had triples in the quarter as the Lancers upped their lead to 48-25 with one quarter to play.

Coach Matt Millburg would go to his bench early in the fourth, the only frame in which Sangamon Valley outscored the Lancers. Even though they were on the short side of the fourth quarter, Lincolnwood still held the Storm to single digits, just seven points, as they cruised to a 19-point win, their 17th of the season.

Shawn Goebel was one of three Lancers in double figures with 16 points, while Cole Sidwell and Sam Herman added 11 points apiece. Devin Brown and Jhadyn Walker would add five each, followed by Braxton Schmedeke with two and Will Jenkins with one.

For the game, Lincolnwood was 14-for-22 from the foul line, shooting at a 13-for-16 clip in the first half.

The Lancers will be tested in their next game on Tuesday, Feb. 11, as they take on North Mac in Girard. The two teams squared off in New Berlin earlier this year, with the Panthers winning 49-40.
