Suburban Chicago Man Killed In I-55 Accident


A suburban Chicago man was killed when his car collided with a track hoe in a construction zone on Interstate 55 north of Litchfield Thursday evening, April 29.

David R. Grapes, 69, of Clarendon Hills, was pronounced dead at the scene by Montgomery County Coroner Randy Leetham.

Grapes was driving a 2007 Toyota Camry northbound on I-55 at 5:48 p.m. Thursday, two miles north of Litchfield where traffic is diverted around a construction zone that is closed and barricaded.  According to Illinois State Police, Grapes drove around several construction barricades and traveled for several hundred feet before colliding with a stationary Caterpillar track hoe.

According to state police, the crash remains under investigation.
