Summer Gifted Offers Hands-On Learning

Over 60 fourth through eighth grade students from around the state have gathered for a week of exciting hands-on learning during the 17th annual Litchfield Summer Gifted Academy held June 9-14, at Litchfield High School.

This year's group of gifted students were able to select classes based on their grade levels.

Fourth through sixth grade choices and teachers include Konstruction Junction, Lynne Taylor; Around the World in Five Days, Kate Alderman; ACTing Up, Della Montgomery; and Phun with Physics, Kelley Sonneborn.

Sixth through eighth grade choices and teachers include Top Class Chef, Amanda Lamore; Phenomenal Photography, Shane Cress; Hands On Zoology, Dr. Ed Zalisko; and Robotics Reloaded, Matt Wangling.

Throughout the day, campers worked on projects such as dancing robots, dissecting and working with different animals, making origamy, hoverboards, making healthy meal plans and more. The evening hours are occupied by several night activities for the campers including Lake Williamson, St. Louis Zoo, Lindenwood University, Whole Foods, St. Louis Arch, Westside Cinema, Grizzly Stadium and Memorial Park. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, students are treated to a meal at Maverick.

The week will conclude with an open house on Friday, June 14, beginning at 4 p.m. at the high school, where students will showcase the projects they have worked on all week long. The public is encouraged to attend and show their support.

"We're super proud of the fact that we have kept our prices the same every year," said Program Director Jo Brummet.

The Litchfield Summer Gifted Academy offers instructional courses that cover writing, humanities, social studies, science and mathematics, and are taught to students who have completed fourth through eighth grades.

The deadline to register is April 15, and the registration fees are $350 for commuters and $650 for residents. Parents who choose to pay in full by April 15 receive a $45 application fee discount. Two payment options are available for those interested in enrolling their children in the program.
