Susan Jean Friesland, 75, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2024, at 6:10 p.m. at Hillsboro Rehab and Health Care Center in Hillsboro.

There will be a memorial gathering  Saturday, Feb. 10, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church in Hillsboro. Funeral service will follow at noon with a meal after. The Rev. Michael Plummer, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Hillsboro, IL, and Pastor Leland Redfern will officiate. Per her wishes, her body was donated to science. Bass-Patton-Dean Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Mrs. Friesland was born June 22, 1948, in Litchfield, to the late Ross Eugene and Valeria (Plunkett) Hancock. She was a 1968 Hillsboro High School graduate and went on to marry Melvin Friesland on July 17, 1971 at Calvary Baptist Church in Hillsboro, and he survives in Hillsboro.

Mrs. Friesland worked as a waitress and caregiver through the Department of Rehabilitation. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Hillsboro. She enjoyed camping, fishing and mushroom hunting. Mrs. Friesland was an avid reader and made wedding cakes for many family members, being well known for her pumpkin roll cake.

Mrs. Friesland is survived by her husband, Melvin Friesland; one son, Ross Ray Friesland of Taylor Springs; siblings, Ronita Rufus, Ronald Hancock and Ross Dean Hancock.

She was preceded by her parents; grandson, Ross Friesland;  siblings,  Robert E. Hancock Sr., Russell Hancock, Robin (Hancock) Boyd and Ray Hancock; two nephews, Floyd Lang and Wyatt Riggs; and niece, Melissa Sue Rufus.
