A man who rammed a Hillsboro police car during a chase that began at the Montgomery County Jail was ultimately arrested in Litchfield on Thursday night, Feb. 6.

Christopher A. Smith, 44, of Hillsboro, was taken into custody in the 700 block of Clinton Street in Litchfield and charged with criminal damage to state supported property, aggravated battery to a police officer, speeding, aggravated fleeing to elude police, and violation of an order of protection.

According to Hillsboro Police Chief Randy Leetham, the incident began at 9:17 p.m. Thursday when a female who was driving through Butler at the time called 911 to report that a driver was chasing her and had rammed her vehicle from the rear several times.

The caller lead her follower to the Montgomery County Jail in Hillsboro, where he fled from two Nokomis police officers who were in the jail parking lot processing a detainee.

A Hillsboro police officer spotted Smith pulling away from the jail parking lot and attempted to block the roadway, but the driver rammed the Hillsboro squad car and fled toward Litchfield on Route 16, according to Leetham.

Police pursued the fleeing driver into Litchfield where Litchfield police deployed spike strips.  Smith continued west to Clinton Street and was taken into custody without incident there.

In addition to Hillsboro Police Department, officers from Litchfield, Nokomis, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, and Illinois State Police assisted in the matter.  State police handled the crash involving the Hillsboro squad car and the criminal issues outside of Hillsboro’s venue.
