Both Brayden Bolyard and Joe Mattson would advance to the quarterfinals of the IHSA Class 1A Rochester Tennis Sectional on Friday, May 17, before bowing out to bring their season to a close.
Bolyard would be in the top half of the bracket and drew a bye in the first round, then battled back from an opening set loss to beat Sacred Heart-Griffin's Kade Martin 5-7, 7-5, 7-5.
In the quarterfinal, Bolyard would face Julian Lopez-Arenas Barquero of Rochester, the top seed in the tournament. Lopez-Arenas Barquero would pick up a 6-0, 6-0 win, en route to a sectional championship in singles.
On the other side of the bracket, Joe Mattson faced Jacksonville's Nicholas Hester and scored a 6-4, 6-4 victory in the first round. In his second match, Mattson beat the sixth seed, Springfield's Alexander Millard, in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3 to move on to the quarterfinals.
There he would face Hassaan Khan of Chatham Glenwood. Khan, the fourth seed, would beat Mattson 6-2, 6-2, en route to a third place finish on the day.
In doubles play, both Hillsboro teams fell in their first match. Trevor Hartman and Chance Murray would lose to Macomb's Matthew Jacques and Atoa Stone 6-2, 6-3, while Wilson Hamby and Dane Huber had a first round bye before falling to Michael Custeau and Jordan Goertz of Rochester 6-0, 6-1.
The sectional brings the end of the season for the Hiltoppers, who did not have a senior on this year's roster.
