The Hillsboro High School girls tennis team had a tough test in their opening match of the season on Tuesday, Aug. 27, as the Lady Toppers fell to Civic Memorial 6-3 at the Hillsboro Sports Complex.
The Toppers will be battle tested after game number one on the season as three of the six singles matches went to three sets, with two others decided by just eight points total.
Number one singles player Sheridan Schreiber would be involved in one of those three set marathons as she picked up a victory to start the season. After she and Hannah Butkovich split the first two sets 6-4 and 6-2, the two battled it out in a 30-point tiebreaker before Schreiber won 16-14.
Chloe Smail would also win in three sets, 1-6, 7-5, 10-7, while Karli Mackey defeated her opponent in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4.
The Topper losses in singles would be close as Lauren Lucykow fell 7-5, 7-5 and Torrence Clark fell 6-4, 6-4. Maia Moranville had the other three-setter, falling 2-6, 6-2, 10-7.
Tied up at three after singles, Civic Memorial would sew up the win in doubles, winning all three matches, 10-6, 10-6 and 10-3.
The Lady Toppers will look to get win number one on Thursday, Aug. 29, when they travel to Troy to take on Triad.
