It was a completely different look for the Lady Toppers on Wednesday, Sept. 2, as the Hillsboro girls tennis team made their debut against Greenville.
With the loss of five of last year’s top six, the Toppers are learning as they go this season, which has already been a challenge due to COVID-19.
In Wednesday’s opener, which was pushed back a day after rain on Tuesday, Hillsboro would pick up a pair of wins, but fell to the rival Comets by a 7-2 margin.
Greenville would win five of the six singles matches, with sophomore Sally Matson earning the victory in the number five match over Anna Walker, 6-3, 6-2. The other five matches would all end in straight sets, although Torrence Clark (the lone holdover from Hillsboro’s 2019 top six) put up a fight in the number one match against Paige Mathias before falling 6-3, 7-6 (4).
Clark would get another shot at Mathias in doubles as she and Meghan Garmon challenged the Comets’ number one and number two, Katelyn Ridens. Unfortunately, Hillsboro would fall 8-3 in the pro set, the same score as the number three doubles match in which Megan Fitzgerald and Cora Miller defeated the HHS team of Tressie Clinard and Ally Devore.
Matson would be a part of the other win as well, teaming up with Paige Lucykow to defeat Evie Johnson and Ellie Schaufelberger 8-4.
Coach Jodi Speiser, who took over head duties from Jen Anderson after serving as an assistant the last few years, will have her team ready to go again on Tuesday, Sept. 8, when the Lady Hiltoppers travel to Chatham.
