The Hills Were Alive With The Sound Of Footsteps

Seventeen runners and eight walkers braved the big hill at the end of the Old Settlers 4-Mile Run and 2-Mile Walk on Saturday, Aug. 3, the 38th edition of the race.

Rem Dyas made up the deficit in the staggered start, which releases runners from the starting line in age groups, and won the run with a chip time of 24:02.09. Matt Vaughn would be second, while Kurt Hoehn crossed the finish line third. James Zimmerman and Will Adkins completed the top five list.

In terms of chip time, Dyas was first, followed by Vaughn, Zimmerman, Adkins and Hoehn. Christine May would be the first female finisher and had the sixth best chip time of the day.

While the race wasn't the biggest of the 38 years of the event, it showed that it is one that anyone can participate in. From under nine to over 70, runners from ten different age groups participated in this year's run.

The walk was just as spread out, with eight participants in five different age groups. John Mullins would be the first to cross the finish line, posting a mark of 26:33.87, while Anne McLaughlin was second and Tim Carney third.

"Our cross country coach made us do it back then," said Carney, who remembers doing the first Old Settlers run when he was in high school.

In addition to participating in an Old Settlers tradition, the group also raised funds for the Montgomery County Cancer Association, who lent volunteer support and passed out snacks during the race.
