The Lincolnwood boys basketball team has been strong in the third quarter at home all season, having outscored their opponents in 10 of their 12 games in the period going into their regional semifinal game in Raymond on Feb. 26. That trend would continue on Wednesday as the Lancers outscored Bunker Hill 24-4 in the third quarter to turn a 22-20 halftime deficit into a 22 point lead.
The Lancers would go on to win 58-39 on Wednesday to advance to their first regional championship since 2016, thanks to a 10-for-11 run from the free-throw line in the fourth, but it was the third that sealed the deal for the host school.
Six different players would score in the quarter for the Lancers, with senior Sam Herman bringing in the lion’s share of the points. Herman, who had five points going into the quarter, tripled that total in the third with ten points to give him a team-best 15 for the game.
Lincolnwood also got five points from Will Jenkins in the third, including a three, his third of the game.
Jenkins’ first two threes came in the second quarter, when the Lancers built up a 21-12 lead before Bunker Hill chipped the margin down to 22-20 by halftime.
After the surge in offense in the third, the Lancers got most of their points from the free-throw line in the fourth. Senior Evan Hopper made eight trips to the charity stripe in the quarter and hit all eight chances to keep his team out in front.
Hopper would finish with 12 points in the game, joining Herman and Jenkins, who finished with 11 points, in double figures. Shawn Goebel, who hit two free throws in the fourth, finished with six points, while Cole Sidwell (five), Jhadyn Walker (four), Braxton Schmedeke (three) and Devin Brown (two) stair-stepped down the stat sheet behind him.
The victory gave the Lancers 21 wins going into Friday’s regional championship game in Raymond, the most since the Lancers went 22-9 in 2014.
