The Nokomis Lady Redskins traveled to Carlinville on Dec. 26 to battle the Purple Panthers of Litchfield in the Carlinville Holiday Tournament. It would be the third and final match-up between the two teams of the 2019 season, with Litchfield the victors in the first two rounds.
The Skins had a two week span with no games, so they knew they would have to get back into gear quickly in order to pull off a win against the Panthers. The Panthers were going to come out tough, looking for their third win against the Skins.
It was a slow start for the Skins in the first quarter as they were out-hustled, out-rebounded and outscored. They let the Panther guards shoot wide open threes and let the post-players get the majority of the rebounds. They were trailing the Panthers 16-3 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter wasn’t much different for Nokomis. Their shots weren’t falling and their defensive intensity just wasn’t there. It was obvious they had a two week gap of no games.
Heading into the locker room at half, the Skins trailed the Panthers by 20, 28-8.
Coming out at half, the Skins picked up the pace a bit on defense and fortunately some of their shots started to fall. Going into the final quarter, the Skins were down 39-20.
The Litchfield guards seemed to control the game as they were knocking down shots they hadn’t made the first two times the teams battled. Despite the intensity and hustle of the Lady Redskins picking up in the second half, they were defeated 49-30.
Nokomis was led by Macee Eisenbarth with ten points and nine rebounds. Hailey Engelman added nine points herself and Mia Fesser helped with four.
Litchfield was led by Becky Painter, who had 15 points, nine of which came from three-point land. Carson Jackson also hit a pair of threes for half of her 12 points, while Cara Pence added another triple as she finished with nine.
